The blue mud wasp hunts for spiders with which to stock its
larval cells, primarily black widows and its relatives.
For some reason unknown to me, blue mud wasps congregate in large numbers on this and a nearby rafter under my patio roof. This picture shows a small part of the gathering. It seems to occur once a year (not positive of that)..
The blue mud wasp doesn't construct its own nest, but
refurbishes abandoned cells of other species, such as
the yellow and black mud dauber wasp.
