Count its legs. If it has six legs, no more and no less, (though some use only four for walking) it is an insect. Insects are frequently included in a poorly defined catagory called "BUGS". To be correct, all true bugs are insects, but most insects are not bugs. Insects are generally thought of as pests, to be eliminated. Most insects are not pests, but even those which are may turn out to be very interesting and useful to study.
