The cottony
cushion scale is one of the more serious threats to my
tangelo tree. In
the 19th century this bug nearly destroyed citrus farming in
California. The industry was saved by importing the Vedalia
beetle (Rodolia cardinalis).
The female
is hermaphroditic (has both sexes) and has a large white egg sac.
I had not seen the cottony cushion scale on my tree before 2006.
