The common calosoma
belongs the Carabidae, the family known as ground beetles because they
are generally found on the ground, and under rocks. However, the
common calosoma will frequently clime trees or shrubs in search of
caterpillars and other prey. This one is on the trunk of a palm
tree.
This picture shows
the rows of tiny pits which cover the back of the common
calosoma. Like most of the carabid beetles, this species is
considered beneficial by gardeners.
